our history

In 1985 Richard D. Harris and George H. Haines Sr. began to discuss opening their own abrasive manufacturing plant in Richard’s small hometown of Erwin, TN. At that time Richard D. Harris was the division plant manager of Superior Hone Corporation Division of MWA in the Bradenton/Sarasota, Florida area. Superior Hone was founded in Elkhart, Indiana in the mid 1940’s and was a large contributor to the war effort with tool room production and precision honing equipment. Superior moved to Erwin, TN in the 1950’s and then on to the Bradenton/Sarasota, Florida area in 1976.

Richard had been employed by Superior Hone in both, the Erwin, TN and Bradenton/Sarasota, Florida area for 30+ years. His dream was always to bring the business and the jobs back to Erwin, TN. In 1986 Richard D. Harris and George H. Haines made that dream become a reality by opening up Tennessee Abrasive Inc. in Erwin, TN. Since 1986 Tennessee Abrasive has grown immensely and thanks to all of our loyal customers continues to grow today.

Richard and George have both since passed however their legacy and strive to provide a successful company in Erwin, TN offering the best, most affordable products with no exception lives on through their families and Tennessee Abrasive Inc.
